さめる【覚める･醒める】

1 〔目覚める〕 wake up; awake(n).

●眠りから覚める awake(n) from one's sleep [slumber]

・夢から覚める wake from a dream

・目の覚めるような黄色 a bright [vivid, dazzling] yellow.

●夜中に何度も目が覚めた. I awoke [woke up] many times during the night.

・夜中に目が覚め, そのまま夜明けを迎えた. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get to sleep again.

・その時はもう目が覚めていた. I was already awake at the time.

・昼まで目が覚めなかった. I didn't wake up [awaken] till midday.

・目が覚めるまで寝かせておこう. Let's let him sleep till he wakes up by himself.

・目が覚めましたか. 〔病人に〕 Are you awake?

・これが夢なら覚めないでほしい. If this is a dream, I don't want to wake up.

・工場は長い眠りから覚めて操業を再開した. The factory woke from its long slumber and stirred into action again.

2 〔酒酔いが消える〕 become sober; sober up; 〔麻酔が切れる〕 regain feeling. [⇒さめている, さめた]

●びっくりしていっぺんに酔いがさめた. I had a terrible fright and sobered up at once.

・麻酔からさめる come out of an(a)esthesia

・患者さんはあと 30 分ほどで完全に麻酔がさめます. The effects of the patient's an(a)esthetic will wear off completely in thirty minutes.

3 〔迷いが消える〕 be disillusioned; be undeceived; 〔正気になる〕 come to [regain] one's senses. [⇒さめている]

●彼はまだ迷いから覚めていない. He is not yet disillusioned.

・私は失敗して目が覚めた. My failure brought me to my senses.

・悪い夢からようやく覚めることができた. I finally managed to regain my senses [extricate myself from a nightmare situation].

・まだ目が覚めないのか. Haven't you come to your senses yet?

III

さめる【褪める】

〈色が主語〉 go [come] off; fade (away); 〈物が主語〉 lose color; discolor.

●さめない色 a fast color

・さめない青 fadeproof blue

・さめやすい色 a fugitive color.

●その色はさめやすい. That color fades easily.

・この色は洗ってもさめない. This color will stand washing [not fade from washing].

・〔調理の手順で〕 (ゆでた時)アスパラガスの鮮やかな緑がさめないうちに冷水にとります. Plunge the (boiled) asparagus into cold water before it loses its bright green color.

・表紙の色がだんだんさめてきた. The colors on the cover have gradually faded.
